Most commonly the butterfly is a symbol of transformation due to its development from a caterpiller to a butterfly. To the ancient Greeks the butterfly was a symbol of the soul and the greek word for butterfly is 'psyche'. It is from this that we get words such as 'psychology'. The butterfly is also seen as a symbol of the mind. Some cultures, including China, see the butterfly as a symbol of spiritual love. From these positive meanings it can be seen why the butterfly has also been used as symbolic of celebration. |
